I've got a range of the Uniqlo Colorful 50 socks in part to deal with this exact problem. As a fellow Sweater I do enjoy going sockless but not when I'm going to do something nice, later, so - color coordination or contrast via sock.
I don't know what this is, but there's very much a blue collar uniform of dudes wearing shorts year-round in PA. And the rural corner of the state I grew up in had a hyper-local emphasis on them being paired to slide sandals and black athletic socks. Not any black athletic socks, mind you, but Nike ones with the little white swoosh up top. I still see it all the time when I go back.
I grew up in South Florida where socks of any kind were a sign you came from somewhere else; kids wore their fathers’ plaid bermudas and dressy shoes and socks to go trick or treating on Halloween. Everybody has a Nathan, right? Mine was named Martha, but she was trying to get everyone to call her Mitty because she wanted to be a preppy. We already went to a prep school, btw, so I found her aspirations confusing.
